Taxpayers Association of Europe demands not to weaken OLAF
The Taxpayers Association of Europe asks the President of the European Commission, Mr Romano Prodi, not to curtail the responsibilities of OLAF (Office Européen de Lutte Antifraude).
The measures envisaged by the Prodi Commission would be, according to Taxpayers’ President Rolf von Hohenhau, a slap in the face for the protection of the financial interests of the European Communities.
The Commission plans not to call in OLAF any more when investigations against officials of the Commission are carried out but to carry out the investigations itself. OLAF should, according to this proposal by the Commission, only deal with cases of “serious fraud”.
Instead of weakening the position of the anti-fraud unit OLAF, the Commission should do everything possible to reform OLAF and to equip it with such manpower that it is able to fight against fraud more efficiently.
In view of the Eurostat scandal it would now be a wrong measure to curtail the rights and responsibilities of OLAF. Instead the President of the Commission Prodi should set the course for faster and more efficient investigations.
For the Taxpayers Association of Europe it looks like as if President Prodi tries to make OLAF the scapegoat for the Commission’s own failures.
